Newfoundland
Newfoundland was the last province in Canda I visited. I had even been to the Magdalene Islands. There's a reason Newfoundland is called The Rock. It is rock and incredibly beautiful rock. Two tectonic plates meet in Newfoundland bringing two different materials crashing together and leaving a wonder to see.
Along with the rocks, I've included a few tourist photos of lobster traps, but in fact there's nothing touristy about them; that's how they are.
What's missing is photos of the people of Newfoundland. I would need to be there longer, get to know and understand the people, and only then try to capture their image.
One night we walked over from our residence on Fogo Island to the local centre to hear Irish music. If only I had photos of that. As beautiful as the island is, the spirit of the people living on the island is its heart.
There's something about the place that both Anne and I felt was home. Against all reasonableness, we felt could live there, felt no hesitation in us to say we could live there. Something about belonging. About the Sirens.
If you haven't been to Newfoundland, don't wait for as long as I did. I hope this small selection of images will encourage you to discover the incredible beauty of the rock. And along that way to experience the redeeming beauty of the people for whom the rock is home.
